Welcome to Embodied Lotus Therapy. My name is Susannah Turner, a Psychologist in Fort Collins, CO. I tend to work with clients who experience difficulties such as trauma (PTSD and/or complex trauma), attachment injuries, relational challenges, chronic stress, depression, life-transitions/identity development, and/or grief. I am passionate about connecting with people and feel deeply honored to walk besides individuals as they create a fulfilling life. I view client’s challenges through a lens of compassion and understanding, recognizing that most often the difficulties people have today were once solutions and helped them survive. However, these lifesaving skills may be leading to challenges today. I support people in exploring and creating new ways of interacting with themselves and the world to lead a more aligned life.

I know intimately the way that painful experiences and loss can shape us and how challenging it can be to integrate more gentle ways of interacting with ourselves. I learned brilliant ways of surviving challenging things, but they often kept me distanced from the things I deeply valued, such as connection, joy, acceptance, presence, and peace. As painful as this process can be, there is a freedom that comes with no longer fighting our experience or emotions OR becoming overwhelmed and consumed by them. I am deeply connected to the power of compassion and welcoming all parts of our experience and how this opens space for our humanity, connection, and peace despite the challenge.

I desire to support others in this process and can easily see the strengths clients hold that they may not be able to see. I make connections between the challenges individuals are having today and experiences of the past; not to trudge up the past but to heal the original wound and experience relief in the present moment. I also have a strong repertoire of approaches and interventions and can help find the approach that fits best for clients. Growth clients have shared with me recently include their ability to find emotional equanimity in spite of challenging experiences, improved relationships, experiencing relief from self-harm and thoughts of suicide, greater connection with their bodies, and more hope for the future.

In order to accomplish this, I integrate tools inspired by neuropsychology, attachment theory, parts work, somatic psychology, self-compassion, and mindfulness that brings about greater ease, connection, safety, and clarity. My approach to therapy is individualized and customized depending upon the client’s needs. I typically take a few sessions to get to know my clients, understand their history and the challenges coming up in their life. In these sessions, we are exploring the client’s strengths, resilience, and challenges. We clarify where a client would like to go and what would make therapy successful.

From this place, we may explore skills that will help a client navigate their life. I believe that knowledge is powerful and may provide psychoeducation on topics connected to client’s challenges or recommend resources. I typically share with clients different ways we can work with their presenting concern to gain clarity on what feels most aligned for each individual. And then we get to work =)
